When I first began working with SaaS product teams, I had plenty of technical expertise and other skills. And I’d had several years’ experience developing go-to-market strategies for a range of technology products. But it was nonetheless a real “a-ha moment for me to realize just how central the product management role has become to the success of SaaS apps and other modern digital businesses.
Product management is a challenging role that takes a mix of technical, strategic, organizational, and emotional skills to do really well. Great product teams set a high bar for the rest of us. They keep the trains running and ship product on time, but also are driven by ferocious customer focus, insatiable curiosity, and a willingness to experiment and challenge the status quo.
Nurturing that kind of product management is is one of the things that distinguishes the most innovative, fastest-growing tech companies. And a “growth mindset is one of the most important attributes of successful PMs today.
But what does it really take to develop a growth mindset? SparkPost’s product team is sharing their perspective in a new guide for other PMs. Some of the ideas we discuss include:
- How successful product managers think about growth, as well as some of the specific skills characterize growth-driven product managers.
- How to build growth into the earliest stages of product development, and what aspects of a product tend to have growth potential.
- How to work with customers (and some of the questions to ask them!) to help set a product up for growth.
So check out “The Product Manager’s Growth Guide and let us know what you think. We’d love to hear how your PM team builds growth into your products and your take on the skills that really matter for PMs today.
