Denmark Open Day One Recap: Mixed results saw Sameer Verma pulls off stunning upset, while PV Sindhu ousted in first round

With the first day of the Denmark Badminton Open underway, there were plenty of good results and upsets for the Indian badminton players.

The first day of the new Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Park kicked off on Tuesday. PV Sindhu was the first seed to be eliminated as she was beaten by a familiar face in the name of Zhang Beiwen with 11-21, 21-11, 15-21 scoreline.

Sameer romps

In the Men’s singles, Sameer Verma pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the tournament, consigning world n0.2 Shi Yuqi to the earliest exit in straight games.

 

 

In the doubles Satwiksairaj and Ashwini Ponnappa bowed out of the mixed doubles first round 17-21, 18-21 against Seung Jae and Yujung.

Manu Attri-Sumeeth Reddy went down fighting against the World No 6 pairing of Astrup and Rasmussen, lose the first round match 23-25, 21-18, 16-21.

Elsewhere Sania Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth both won to progress to the second round.

Day Two Schedule

Jakkamapudi Meghana and Ram Poorvisha sees action in the women’s doubles for the first time and Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy face-off easy draw against Australian lower seeded opponents. Other match in Men’s singles will see Sai Praneeth opens play against Huang Yuxiang in the first round match.
