He’s barely a tween, but Hyderabad’s Rohan Arya Gondi has already begun scripting a remarkable success story on the world stage with two titles – winner and a runner-up – in two weeks time on the World Junior Squash circuit.
Rohan Arya Gondi ended 2018 with a bang by winning the boys U-13 championship at the US Junior Squash Open held at Boston, USA between Dec 15-18 with participation from 41 countries.
The prior week, Rohan came runner-up at the Canada Junior Squash Open, losing to Egypt No. 1 Youssef Salem in 5 close games in the finals to come second in the tournament.
But the 12-year-old from Hyderabad bounced back really well. It was a moment of reckoning as it was not an easy win at all, not against a spirited opponent who was willing to try anything and everything to unsettle the Indian. Where Rohan stood out was his ability under pressure to come up top.
Rohan played a tactically sound mid-game to outwit Pakistan’s Humam Ahmed in a evenly-fought five games at 11-4, 10-12, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9 and ended 2018 in a positive note, building and taking confidence on his runner-up at the Canada Junior Squash Open on December 11.
This was his maiden trip to North America and he was on the road for approximately 2000 Kms in a span of 2 weeks braving sub zero temperatures, chilling winds and multiple hotel rooms.
The 12 year old from Oakridge international school didn’t let jetlag, harsh weather and constant travel distract him from his laser sharp focus on his goal of winning the US Open crown.
After receiving a bye in the first round, the third-seeded Rohan beat Adam Ibrahim of USA 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 on 15th December. On 16th Dec morning, he beat Mexican Luis Mendez 11-1, 11-6, 11-6. On 16th Dec evening, he got past Adam Elkaliuoby of Egypt 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7.
On 17th Dec morning, he sailed past USA No.3 Johan P. Hodgson 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 in the quarterfinals. On 17th Dec evening, he booked his place in the final by beating USA No. 1 Wenqing Tang 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.
In the finals, he clashed with Pakistani Humam Ahmed, who had beaten top seed Youssef Salem in the quarterfinals. He came out on top after an hour-long gruelling match, winning 11-4, 10-12, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9.
He was given the winner’s medal by John Palfrey, the Head of School at Phillips Academy, which hosted the event.
