President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected reports that hundreds of migrants would be flown from the Mexican border to Florida and other areas in the U.S. interior to decrease the work at congested Border Patrol facilities.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, also on Sunday, acknowledged that federal authorities did initially alert regional leaders of the possibility that migrants would be flown to 2 South Florida counties. But Trump appeared to blame the media for “false reporting.”
” There are no plans to send migrants to northern or Coastal Border centers, including Florida,” Trump wrote on Twitter “… Our nation is FULL, will not, and can not, take you in!”
The workplace of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also said Sunday that Trump informed him he didn’t authorize and wouldn’t authorize to fly the immigrants.
The guv’ spokeswoman Helen Ferre said DeSantis talked with Trump on Saturday, 2 days after local officials reacted with alarm to a U.S. Border Patrol notification that 1,000 migrants might be sent out on a weekly basis to Palm Beach and Broward counties, beginning in about 2 weeks.
After the plan was assaulted by local leaders recently, federal officials initially stated the flights were only being thought about and nothing was taking place right away.
On Sunday, McAleenan stated that Florida and other cities in the interior were no longer in consideration. He appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and stated the plan “wasn’t going to be a reliable usage of federal government resources.”
” We took a look at it from a preparation point of view. We do have stations in Florida … they are really little stations, they have a couple of agents that are hectic patrolling their locations,” he stated. He included that the decision to take the sectors of Miami, Detroit and Buffalo off the table was made Saturday by John Sanders, acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The company’s Miami sector consists of all South Florida.
” We had to take a look at all alternatives,” he stated.
The government has actually run out of area to process migrants who have been coming to the Texas border. McAleenan stated there are currently 16,000 people in custody at Border Patrol stations and ports of entry. The government started flying hundreds of migrants from Texas to San Diego, to distribute the work at Border Patrol facilities more uniformly.
As soon as migrants are processed, they are released and given a court date in a city where they prepare to live, frequently with household members, which could be throughout the U.S.
DeSantis apparently had been caught off guard and said such flights would total up to “disposing” migrants on Florida. He appeared upset that Florida was even a factor to consider, specifically after he just recently signed a bill banning sanctuary cities and vowing to assist federal immigration authorities.
Trump and DeSantis are close. The president backed DeSantis, which moved him from underdog to winner in last year’s governor’s race.
Palm Beach County Constable Ric Bradshaw, one of the very first authorities to openly denounce the plan, recommended in an audio message shared by means of Twitter on Saturday that the fast responses with alarm from regional officials and federal lawmakers who represent Florida made federal authorities change their mind.
” Since of everyone’s efforts, we had the ability to stop what it seemed a crisis for our communities.”
