Weightlifting: 4-member squad look o lift India’s first unlikely gold in 2018 Asian Games

Having never won a medal in weightlifting in Asian Games history, Indian 4-memeber contingent look to lift the nation’s first ever gold in Jakarta.

Background

The last time, India landed in podium at weightlifting was 1998. That’s none other than Karnam Malleswari, silver in 1998 Asiad and a bronze in 2000 Olympics.

Weightlifting is one of three power sport of India (Other two Shooting, Wrestling), India’s conversion rate of medals in weightlifting from Commonwealth Games to Asiad is drastically poor. From 124 medals in Commonwealth games to fourteen in Asiad till today, numbers speaks.

Even Jakarta line up also doesn’t look strongest with Mirabai Chanu pulling out following suspension of two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Sanjita Chanu after testing positive in drug test. Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Sathish Sivalingam will carry India’s hope now, but unless he steps up the chances of winning a medal itself looks blurred. China, medal topper in weightlifting doesn’t send its squad to this year Asian games, which is a huge advantage for other countries, including India.

Story so far

Did you know? India have never won a gold medal in weightlifting at the Asian games. Hard but true, with Mirabai Chanu in squad, India was hoping to grab its first Gold medal. But the world champion weightlifter pulled out recently from Asian games is a big setback for India.

Olympic bronze medalist & first female Olympic medalist Karnam Malleswari and legendary Kunjarani Devi took the sport to higher level but still a Gold medal at Asian Games in weightlifting is a dream for India.

Squad

India’s contingent as of now is 3 men and a woman

Women: 63 kg Rakhi Halder

Men: 77 kg Sathish Kumar Sivalingam; Ajay Singh 94 kg: Vikas Thakur.

Best medal hope

Sathish Sivalingam

His Commonwealth games 2018 Gold medal was a heroic feet as he become first Indian male weightlifter to win two consecutive Commonwealth Games golds. Sathish Gold in 2018 is holds much more importance, as he won the Gold irrespective of carrying an injury, If Sathish can step up it would be a historical medal for India in Asiad.
